Bilkent Historical Model United Nations (BHMUN) is an educational simulation of the United Nations (UN) organisation. The Secretariat is looking for future world leaders to go back in time and debate serious issues during a past decade to ‘Innovate the Future’. Those who attend BHMUN come from a variety of backgrounds, nations and ethnicity. The BHMUN conference uses Harvard procedures which are very different to that of THIMUN affiliated conferences. We believe that having both a historical element together with Harvard procedure makes BHMUN an exceptionally unique conference within Turkey.
The Secretariat is responsible for assigning committees and the respective agenda items. The Under Secretary-General for each committee is responsible for providing the Study Guide that offers a context for the agenda items and corresponding dates.
The Board Members of each committee (not including the International Court of Justice) consist of a President Chair, Deputy Chair and Rapporteur. These roles ensure the committees are formally run according to Harvard procedure. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) Presidency consists of a President Judge, Vice-President Judge and Registrar who ensure the ICJ committee is formally run according to court procedure.
The conference is organised by high school students for high school students. All applicants at the time of the conference must be 14 years of age or older and enrolled in a high school. An exception is made for Admin Team Members who are all recruited from Özel Bilkent Middle School.
Any applicant (except an Admin Team Member) who is 13 years of age or younger by the commencement of the conference (grades 5 – 8 in Turkish middle schools) will not be accepted.
All Delegation applications must be made by the Model United Nations (MUN) Club Advisor who is a high school teacher and has the permission from the school principal to attend. Once a delegation application has been made, the Head of Communication and Public Information (CPI) will email a ‘High School Acceptance Form’ to each Advisor which must be completed with a signature from the high school principal and official high school stamp for approval.
An application must be made on the BHMUN website in order for an applicant to be considered for a role in the conference. All relevant questions must be completed prior to submission. The system will provide information if the application has not been completed correctly.
DATA PROTECTION DECLARATION
Upon submitting an online application, the Head of CPI will email all applicants a copy of the BHMUN ‘Data Protection Policy Consent Form’. This form must be completed by all participants of the BHMUN conference, including organisers from the Özel Bilkent Schools and applicants from other schools located in Turkey or abroad. Further information regarding the collection, processing, use, storage protection and sharing of personal information can be found on the BHMUN website on the ‘Data Protection Declaration’ webpage: click here
All individual applications for a position within a special committee, or application pair (ICJ Advocates), will be required to complete the online application form. Upon completion of the application, an email will be sent by the Head of CPI requesting the submission of a 1 minute screencast. A screencast is a digital video recording capturing an applicant narrating the reasons as to why they are applicable for the role in which they are applying. The screencast must include the applicants’ full name, the position being requested, why the applicant should be taken into consideration and any previous experience in support of the application. The applicant is then required to upload the screencast to the BHMUN Drive; a cloud storage system for sharing files.
BHMUN Drive is a cloud based system for uploading and storing files online. This means BHMUN staff members, as well as individual applicants and advisors, can access a virtual space used for sharing files. Once an online application has been accepted, a Drive Code and Drive Password will be provided by the Head of CPI in order for a participant to access BHMUN Drive.
A BHMUN fee is applicable to Board Members, Delegates, Press Members and Admin Team Members so as to attend the conference. This includes an information pack, lunch for each day of the conference, bottled water and break time snacks. The fee will be requested by email from the Head of CPI after a complete application has been submitted. Once a delegation application has been made, the respective Advisor must submit the High School Acceptance Form with principal signature and official school stamp prior to receiving the payment request. The Advisor must make one payment for the whole delegation.
